Kobayakawa Miyuki (Manga)

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION:

Miyuki is a mechanic-at-heart who knows her way around an engine in a way that’d put most grease-monkeys to shame. She’s worked on just about every kind of car imaginable, from her own beloved Today to Natsumi’s Moto Compo and bike-cop Nakajima’s GSX, tuning them ’til they create better harmony than a Steinway, and she’s even an expert at cyberspacing her way to the facts on any crime. Yet none of this means she’s all brains and cold steel. If anything, it just underscores how much of an alluringly mysterious woman she really is.

(from the Taiho Shichauzo Artbook)

WEBMASTER’S DESCRIPTION:

Perhaps the most skilled character in the series, Miyuki is a calm and prudent, yet subtle and poignant policewoman who is as kind, patient, and gentle in normal situations as she is frightening, deadly, and dangerous if pushed at the right buttons. She is sometimes referred to by her colleagues as "Bokuto’s Human Computer", and for very good reasons. An incredibly intelligent and responsible woman with a clear and composed mind, Miyuki can easily piece together various clues that baffles even her superiors and turn them into vital information that proves extremely helpful when solving cases. Any type of machine, from vehicles to elevators to high-tech computers and even prototypes of new devices never before released by research institutes can be toyed around with by Miyuki’s capable hands, and she even talks to them sometimes, proving just how much of a "mecha-freak" she really is (but she’ll never admit that).

To complement her intelligence, Miyuki possesses remarkable skills for analysis and observation - it’s almost as if all her senses were extremely enhanced to pick up on just about any information fathomable. She can tell what is wrong with an engine and which part needs to be fixed and how by merely listening to it, just as well as she could give a detailed specification of a gun and its projectiles by just firing two shots. Her sense of intuition, plus the attention she gives to her surroundings are probably what feeds a seemingly existent third eye, as she can tell if someone was watching her even if she could not see them.

J-turn at nitro-induced speeds (File 53, Manga)

Miyuki also holds the title "Bokuto Station’s Best Driver", for aside her superb mechanical and electrical engineering prowess, her driving skills are something to be admired as well. She can drive through tight alleys at high speeds like it was nothing; her driving technique enables her to control her personally customized, nitro-boosted mini-patrol car through rough roads and maneuvers most drivers wouldn’t dare do at nitrous-oxide induced speeds. And it doesn’t matter if the car she’s driving is either left or right hand drive - Miyuki could handle both. It doesn’t even stop there - she’s also an excellent markswoman, rarely missing any of her targets even when on top of moving vehicles, making her a dangerous adversary during high-speed chases and long-distance combat.

Despite all her capabilities, however, Miyuki does have disabling weaknesses. She could not stand reptiles, and is deathly afraid of ghosts, monsters, or anything paranormal that cannot be explained by science, so much that she looses all composure and bawls like a child, rendering her almost completely helpless even when confronted by just mere ghost stories. She also cannot easily adopt to sudden, huge changes in her life, and may spend several days in an extremely depressed state until inspiration comes knocking at her door.

Brooding over a recent accident... and over her ex-partner (File 4, Anime OVA)
A clueless Miyuki wonders why her peers are congratulating her (File 4, Anime 2nd Season)

Quite sensitive, Miyuki usually keeps to herself and is rather stoic - she tries hard not to let anybody know how she truly feels. She may seem cold in that sense, but she’s willing to do almost anything for her friends and loved ones, even at the cost of what she holds dear. Miyuki minds her own business, and though that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know what is going around her, it just shows that she would rather leave other people’s lives alone. It’s just too bad everybody else loves meddling with hers. And it doesn’t seem like they’ll stop until she’s married…

…which brings up the topic of her love life. There are many men who were involved with Miyuki during the course of the entire series, but only one person succeeded in winning her heart - fellow police officer Nakajima Ken. They had started out very slow, and Miyuki constantly denied having any relationship with him other than friendship, but everybody else knows that she has completely fallen for him. How they finally admitted their feelings to each other became one of the more important endings for the series, as they were finally engaged and destined to be married, with Miyuki having thoughts of retirement soon after, by the time the manga came to its close.

EDO ERA CHARACTER:

During episodes or drama CDs that places the Taiho Shichauzo cast way back into the Edo Period, Miyuki is usually portrayed as a kind and generous doctor who is well-loved and respected by her patients and can wield a nasty looking scalpel as a weapon if need be.

CHARACTER DESIGN:

Miyuki’s character design had perhaps changed most noticably than all the other characters from when the series first began, and not in terms of how Kosuke Fujishima’s artwork differed over time either. She is the only character in the manga whose hair had majorly changed - from the cute, short bob seen in File 1 to the long hair with occasional stray wisps of the present. And the hair did not grow overnight either. Although her hair suddenly became very long in File 34 of the manga, File 35 had shown her still sporting her short haircut, but it had actually grown slightly longer than usual, and it continued to grow until it reached its current length.

In the anime, Miyuki’s features were based from her last design in the manga, and most of the changes that happened during the series was due only to just how much effort the animators placed into their work, or how the faces were drawn - the design remained technically the same. One noticable difference, however, is how the color of her eyes had diverted from its original blue tinge to the brown she suddenly sported during the movie, and the lavender which she carried from the second season onwards.

INTRODUCTION TO TPD:
TOKYO POLICEWOMAN DUO NO. 2

In the album Taiho Shichauzo: Only One, there was an eight minute interview between Natsumi and Miyuki, where one character questioned another for four minutes each. For some odd reason, both women had wanted to be anonymous and would rather be referred to as TPD No. 1 or 2, but to make matters easier and less confusing, No. 1 is actually Natsumi and No. 2 is Miyuki. The result is a rather interesting and amusing conversation that allows the listener to learn more about both characters.

(Please note that my Japanese is awfully sketchy, and the information that I will be giving may or may not be correct. Some parts of this translation was made with help from “Taiho Shichauzo” in Mi-Ke’s Room)

TPD No. 2

The following took place during Natsumi’s interview of Miyuki:

  • After the initial introductions, where Miyuki had given her bloodtype (A) and zodiac sign (Aries), she mentioned that her hobbies includes baking cakes (she’s particularly proud of her chiffon cake, especially when coupled with black tea) and making candies.
  • Natsumi then asked what Miyuki did during her days off from work. Miyuki answered that she spent the morning cleaning and washing the laundry, and then wasted the afternoon shopping. If there’s enough time afterwards, she went to concerts.
  • Natsumi then eventually inquired about her partner’s favorite song artist. Miyuki admitted that she was not very familiar with any artist, and although she’s always tuned to the FM radio at home, she did not know what the most popular song was at present. Natsumi mentioned that perhaps she liked either Bruce (Springsteen?) or Led Zepplin. Miyuki vehemently denied that she liked any of the artists mentioned, which made her interviewer slightly disappointed.
  • It gets a little vague here, but when Natsumi asks of how Miyuki handled their debut (first concert, perhaps?), Miyuki answered that her goal is not to let anything become a hindrance to their work (??).
  • Natsumi then asks what type of man Miyuki likes, and after much prodding (where Natsumi even tried to ask who her "boyfriend/honey/sweetheart" was, much to Miyuki’s distress), the listener learns that Miyuki’s type of man is somone who:
         - is not persistent;
         - is not too old for her;
         - is strong and smart;
         - isn’t picky when it comes to food;
         - is tidy, clean, and takes a bath everyday;
         - is devoted and enthusiastic about his job, and goes to work everyday;
         - does not try to sabotage other people;
         - always has good intentions and does not grumble;
         - does not judge other people;
         - is not an alcoholic;
         - has aspirations and values his pride;
         - eats nato (fermented soybeans).
  • As the discussion continued from there, with Natsumi wondering how nato got into the picture and with Miyuki (finally hyped with the event) defending her answer (she believes eating nato is healthy for one’s body), the four minutes suddenly were up, and despite Miyuki’s protests, Natsumi ended the interview.
